Pete Bossley
Recently listed for sale is this Pete Bossley home which was a finalist for home of the year 2008. When the owners approached Bossley, the brief was simple “make the most of the site … you have free reign.” The owners couldn’t be happier with the result.
The form of the house has been determined by the constraints of the site, which sits between a bush clad cliff that rolls down towards Karaka Bay and the road which the house fronts on to. In order to maximize the space, the house has utilized the space right up to the property boundary. The dark stained veil of cedar acts as a façade to the busy road frontage and also masks the stepped form of the building which came about through height to boundary constraints. There are two cut-out recesses nestled into the kinked road frontage, one that plays host to the garage door, and the other the main entrance.
It is this frontage that the owners fell in love with. They love the wow factor. As the sun works its way across the sky, the house “has a prism effect” which allows sunlight to highlight different features depending on the time of day. Internally, the wow factor continues with an open riser timber and steel stair way rising up from the garage through a triple height space, through the main living area and then on, up to another two levels. This stairway is filtered through layers of a stainless steel mesh screen which hangs from the ceiling, helping to soften the feature without detracting from its ambience.
The owners love how the site and the design connect to create “affinity with the sea” which comes about through the panoramic view out across Karaka Bay to Brown’s Island, where the yachts and lights dance across the ocean and provide a front yard which is ever changing, but always beautiful.
