Perched on the southern peninsula of Auckland’s beautiful Rakino island is this magnificent architecturally designed coastal property. With 300-degree views across the bustling Hauraki Gulf, this is the perfect spot to sit in luxury and watch the world go by.

Rakino Island is famous for its tight knit community spirit and its pristine sheltered moorings, which provide a safe haven for luxury yachts and launches during the warm summer months. Until recently it has been an island of patchwork baches, which were added to when materials were brought over from the mainland. Hurakia Lodge has bucked this trend.

With its 617 square meter living space comprising of five bedrooms with en-suites, the three wings of the house form a distinctive Y shape when viewed from above. The form ensures that whatever the weather, there is an area to shelter from the wind or the sun. Large sliding doors open on all fours sides and so allow the living space to extend onto the extensive decking regardless of the prevailing winds.

Designed as an eco-friendly property, the water supply is collected solely from the roof and stored underground whilst electricity is generated by solar panels which are backed up by a generator when required; this provides a totally self-sufficient power source year round. As a property that is accessible only by helicopter, boat or ferry, the home required a private jetty which acts as a natural extension of the gully which flows down from the extensive decking and manicured lawns.

The clever design allows for a compact living space to be opened out during those hot summer days, allowing seamless flow between the covered decking and the interior of the house. This easy transition gives the outdoor areas shelter and attracts visitors to spend time lazing by the pool or sitting, perched on the deck watching the ever-changing vista. This is the sort of property which seldom comes on the market, but provides an experience that those lucky enough to enjoy, will treasure forever.
